Go and explore your unfound passion
I could never stick to one profession, I’ve had so many different aspirations from 10 years old to 26 years old. I used to question whether it was a good trait to have, back then I wasn’t sure and I didn’t really think about it. I was just excited to pursue my interests. Problem was I never really pursued it, it was always lacking conviction, I failed to commit which prevented any progress. I would say exploring different interests is a great trait to possess if you can show commitment. Otherwise, it’s just another unachievable goal to keep you entertained until the hype wears out and you move onto the next. Out of all of the interests I had there weren’t any I thoroughly enjoyed enough to spend adequate time improving. I think for me, I saw the end goal and thought it was amazing but didn’t think about the steps it took. But at the same time I didn't want to miss out on finding a passion so I gave it a shot anyway. Only when I started to do it is when I realised I wasn't enjoying it. This is when my fear began, doubt, whether i liked it, whether i’m capable of doing anything, if i will ever find something i love.
The one thing I'm sure everyone could agree on is earning a living while working a job you enjoy. Another thing I’m sure everyone can agree on is that the percentage of those who love what they do is rare. There are three categories, those who love what they do, those who hate what they do, and those that are content. I fall into the category of content, I may not love what I do but I know I'll get there in time.
Knowing what you are good at or would like to get good at
When it comes to pursuing a career, hobby, or the likes, most advise to go with your strengths, if only it was that easy. Playing to your strengths is in and of itself a skill, how can you play to your strengths if you are unaware of what they’re. I’ve done my research on this and it’s advised to do personality trait tests as you get a detailed explanation of your strengths and weaknesses and as a bonus you can see public figures who hold the same personality trait and their career choice. This is a great way to get the brain going and ultimately finding an interest to endeavour on.
Let me explain the best way forward - that’s through the classic trial and error. I’ve spoken about this before but I feel like it’s more relevant here. If there is anything preventing you from trying new skills, it’s most likely time. If time is stopping you from learning then frankly you will never find your passion. If you don’t have the means to do it now then what makes you think you will have the means later? It’s difficult, I know. Working 40 hours a week and trying to dedicate time is strenuous, your spare time is better spent relaxing and as you should, you work diligently, week to week. I’m definitely going to get a feel of it as I’m due to start working full time again after almost 2 years of being self employed, if i stop blogging, you know why. But, I can promise myself one thing, I won't stop. I will find time in the day, even if it’s 5 minutes to do something I enjoy. There are more hobbies out there than you think, take 5 minutes of your time to pursue one.
Investing time into a hobby you enjoy will be the best option for your mental health. I’m not an expert in mental health but I don't need a qualification to know that if your life involves nothing but work, you won’t be living a fulfilling life. No one wants to be a slave to their work, you want some sort of freedom. Not freedom as in, travelling the world whenever you want. Freedom as in the feeling of liberation from the imprisonment of your routine, whatever that may be. Learn something, become proficient, teach someone, anything, just do something with your time rather than wasting it.
